My Story
Toronto Canada is where I’m based. My Mom was a violinist in the Toronto Symphony Orchestra for years. Got my prenatal music experience there until I guess her tummy got too big for her to continue performing. When I was little I can recall my Dad playing classical stuff on our piano and singing to exercise his voice.
My folks could see I was drawn to music and had me choose an instrument that I could learn to play. My sister already played piano and my younger brother was learning cello so they encouraged me to choose a wind instrument.
I studied piccolo first and later took flute lessons for some years but I knew there was something missing – you can only play one note at a time on those instruments.
I listened to pop radio a lot as I grew up and by the time I started high school, I was experimenting with various tunes. I could hear the melodies in my head had chords behind them so I started playing my tunes on piano and got a steel string guitar. I’d been writing poetry for a while but it had always remained a separate thing…
That is when words or phrases started to attach themselves to the melodies in my head. Never looked back.
I think if you work at something over time, you can always get better at it. So it is with songwriting.
Once you get over the fact that not everything you write can be great, you can develop a sense of knowing what a stronger lyric is or when you are hearing a stand out melody. Its so great when magic happens and they both fit so each supports the other…
